A message from Mr. York:

EdChoice Voucher Program

The EdChoice Voucher Program has been in the news quite a bit in the last few weeks. The Voucher Program in Ohio is not new having actually started in 2006. However, this version should be totally unacceptable to taxpayers and advocates for public schools in this state. It uses taxpayer dollars to allow eligible students to attend participating private schools.

Five Fast Facts

*The EdChoice Program provides up to 60,000 vouchers for certain students in grades K-12 to attend participating chartered nonpublic (private) schools.

*Funding for the voucher is deducted from the resident school district. These deducted funds are YOUR tax dollars meant for the schools in OUR district.

*Public schools on the EdChoice “list” are determined from scores on the ever-changing state report card. Schools can improve their academic achievement and no longer be on the “list” but continue to be penalized and lose funding under this program.

*Private schools accepting vouchers are not held to the same student achievement standards as public schools under this program.

*Private schools accepting vouchers are NOT held accountable for spending public taxpayer dollars.

There are provisions in this legislation that are totally unacceptable.

-The voucher amount for elementary students is $4,650 per student and high school vouchers are $6,000. These amounts are both much more than Talawanda receives from state funding so YOUR tax dollars make up the difference.

-Students who have never been enrolled in a Talawanda school but live in the district and attend a private school take Talawanda funding.

-Private schools are permitted to pick and choose only the very best students, we accept all students.

-Private schools are not required to administer the same achievement tests that our students are required to take.

Please take a moment and contact your local state legislator and give them your input on this legislation and the resulting effect on Public Schools in Ohio.
