School News and Information

Happy Friday!  Next Week we will hold our Right to Read Week!  This year’s theme is Reading is Out of This World.  Please check each of the themed days.  We are also very thankful to the Oxford Community Foundation who provided a grant to bring in a mobile planetarium.

Monday: Written in the Stars: Wear a shirt with words on it

Tuesday: Space Jam: Wear your favorite team jersey

Wednesday: Out of This World: Wear wacky mismatched clothes

Thursday: Black Hole Day: Wear as much black as possible

Friday: Bright like the Sun: Wear neon/bright colors

Conferences March 15

Parent/Teacher conferences continue on the 15th.  Teachers will offer a Zoom option for conferences.  If you are unable to Zoom, you can attend in person.  Look for more information from your child’s teacher in the coming week to sign up.

From Mrs. French - Art

Our 3rd Grade artists are so excited to be DISPLAYING OUR AUDUBON DRAWINGS THIS SATURDAY at the Oxford Community Art Center for the AMV Bird Art Exhibition and Festival.

We learned about the work of John James Audubon and how his art impacted science and naturalist learning for everyone.  Each student researched a bird from Ohio, found a realistic photograph of their bird in nature and drew following the shapes, line, and color as they saw it.

They are very proud and this video is their compilation of masterpieces that we'd love to share with you. Enjoy!

Please see the attached flyers about National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Also, March is Problem Gambling/Gaming Awareness Month.  The earlier individuals are introduced to gambling, the more likely they are to become problem gamblers as adults.  Many of the video games and apps our youth are involved in simulate the same excitement experienced by gamblers. According to Ohio for Responsible Gambling, 10% - 14% of youth ages 12-17 are at risk; possibly made worse by the pandemic.  Resources are available for parents, students and educators through Change the Game Ohio.  Visit the site at  https://changethegameohio.org

For more information, contact the Health & Wellness Office at 513.273.3390.

The City of Oxford is Developing a NEW Comprehensive Plan

The city of Oxford is in the beginning stages of the next comprehensive plan.  Talawanda School District has a voice on the city Recreation Board, and we've been asked to share the website Oxford Tomorrow, where community members can provide input and stay informed about this process.  This includes the potential development for recreational options/facilities and community activities.  Check it out!

For current 5th graders at Talawanda:

Next week your student will receive their scheduling paperwork for the 2022-2023 school year. Your student will bring home a scheduling form (PINK for incoming 6th graders). This form will require 14 checkmarks (one per semester) and a place to list alternate course choices.

Please refer to the course description guide found here if you have any questions about the course offerings at TMS: https://www.talawanda.org/talawanda-middle-school/course-selection-guide--21/

You can also reach out to your student's next year/TMS School Counselor with questions: Students Last Names A-K: Mr. Hricko (hrickos@talawanda.org)  or Students Last Names L-Z: Ms. Koontz (koontzs@talawanda.org)

Take Care of Talawanda

Take Care of Talawanda is an initiative aimed at providing donations of basic items for elementary school students in need. These include clothing items and essentials for use at school and home. We are seeking participation from both willing donors and invite families who may benefit from additional help to participate as well.  If interested, please fill out the electronic form linked below!

Talawanda Brave Softball Youth Clinic (K-5)

Please see this link for the softball clinic.  The clinic will be held at THS from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm on March 12th and 13th.

Drop off and Pick Up Reminders

Please work with your child on being able to exit the car on their own.  We have seen an increase of parents getting out of the car to get their child out.  This creates a safety concern as well as slows down the drop up and pick up process.  Also please remember to pull forward and fill in all available space in the line so that we can keep the line as short as possible and keep the line moving.  Please make sure you have your name sign displayed so we can easily enter the names for the correct pick up order.  Thank you for your help.

Cooler Weather

As the weather is turning cooler, please remember to send your child dressed to go outside at recess.  This means jackets, coats, hats, and gloves.  In general, we go outside for recess unless the temperature/wind chill drops below 25 degrees. Please label coats & hats with your student’s name. Thank you.

Fees

Chromebook/IPad insurance cannot be waived.  School fees can be paid on the Talawanda website via EZPay or by sending a check to school with your child.  Please include the child’s name in the memo.

Absences

If your child is going to be absent, please call the Marshall Attendance Line @ 513-273-3600 by 10:00 a.m.

TSD Lunch Program

The National Lunch Program has extended the free meal status for all students for breakfast and lunch for the 2021-2022 school year.  It is still important to turn in the Free/Reduced Lunch Application in order to qualify for other benefits.
